Mt Tabor Geography

Mount Tabor stands at 636 feet in elevation whereas the surrounding region sits at around 200 feet. This extinct volcano comprises a section of the Boring Lava Field which is comprised of a mix of small cinder cones and shield volcanoes. These volcanoes have been extinct for around 300,000 years and were last active in the Plio-Pleistocene era. Portland, OR is one of only two cities located in the United States to have an extinct volcano within its city limits (the other US city is Bend, Oregon).

Mount Tabor Park

Mt Tabor Park is 196 acres (0.79 acres) in size and makes up a sizeable percentage of the mountain’s total area. Declared a Historic Place by the National Registry of Historic places in 2004, there is some doubt as to whether Mt Tabor Park has ever been officially declared a “park” by the city. The nomination of the park to Historic Place status along with its reservoirs is thanks in large part to the noteworthy efforts of the Mt Tabor Neighborhood Association. The Historic Place Registry for the reservoirs was headed-up by Friends of The Reservoirs and bank-rolled by private money donations.

Local History

Rich in history, Oregon City was the first city west of The Rocky Mountains to incorporate. Today it serves as the County Headquarters of Clackamas County. Sensibly enough, the city was founded in the year 1829 by John McLoughlin of the Hudson Bay Company at the confluence of the Clackamas and Willamette Rivers. The site was chosen in order to use Willamette Falls to power a lumber mill. It was also the destination of early pioneers who traveled via the Oregon Trail in the 1840′s-50′s. Those pioneers seeking to claim land had to file in Oregon City; which served as the Territory’s Capital from 1848 to 1851. The local newspaper (The Oregon Spectator) was first published in 1846 and became the first newspaper west of the Rockies. Today the area hangs on to some of its past with historic buildings and homes.

Points Of Interest

Historical Buildings and Homes in the area include The Ermatinger House (dating back to 1845), The McLoughlin House (Founder John McLoughlin’s Personal Residence) and also the Stevens Crawford Museum (a 1908 home featuring 15 rooms and many of its original fittings).

Hillsboro, Oregon History

The city of Hillsboro, Oregon can trace its roots to early Pioneers David Hill, Isaiah Kelsey and Richard Williams who founded the first American settlement (1842) in what is now the city of Hillsboro. In those early years the area was known as either East Tualatin (so named for the local Native American Tribe), Columbia until the town was named Hillsborough in honor of David Hill for selling a portion of his land to become city property. The Town was incorporated as its modern name in the fall of 1876. 19th century development of the region was spurred on by the addition of the Oregon and California Railroad in 1871. Local History

Industrial Past Made Way To Upscale Housing, Chic Shops

The Pearl District Business Association maintains that gallery owner Thomas Augustine dubbed the area the “Pearl District” by likening its urban decay industrial buildings to crusty oysters while the stylish art-lofts and galleries within were like pearls. While forward-thinking entrepreneurs sought a catchy name for this area of NW Portland and considered such names as the “warehouse district” or the “brewery district” a writer for Alaska Airlines borrowed and popularized Augustine’s phrase.

In any case, the area is now known as “The Pearl District” and associated with trendy condo developments, fashionable Art Galleries and Lofts was converted from industrial warehouses. This evolution got it’s start with the demolition of the elevated section of NW Lovejoy st between the Broadway Bridge and NW 10th Ave. With Northwest Lovejoy redone as a surface street, a much larger area was opened up for development. This residential development peaked in the early 2000s and has attracted a mix of fine dining establishments, brew-pubs, cocktail bars and art galleries. A few of the local businesses that were part of the Pearl District’s coming of age and became victims of their own success. Perhaps predictably, costs increased in step with the area’s waxing popularity. Learn more about NW Portland, Oregon.

Hawthorne Boulevard History

Hawthorne Boulevard was named after Dr. J.C. Hawthorne, the cofounder of Oregon’s first mental hospital. The road was originally named Asylum Avenue. In 1883 the Oregon State Hospital moved to its present location in Salem. The street was renamed in honor of Dr. Hawthorne. The change from the “distasteful” name was at the behest of the local residents. Today the Hawthorne District bears little in the way of reminders of its colorful past although you will probably see multiple bumper-stickers that read: “Keep Portland Weird”. Sustainability and green living are the norm in Southeast Portland’s Hawthorne District. With Green Roofs, water runoff programs and other developments this area is fast becoming a nexus for green sustainability. Local History

Some sources trace the origins of of this town to the Damascus Post Office; which opened in 1867 and closed in 1904 (sine the year 2007 the Damascus Post Office has been re-opened and operated within a local coffee shop). The Unincorporated areas of Damascus and Carver developed slowly over time as mixed farming and residential use land. In the year 2000 Portland Metro made motions to annex it and its sister-community of Carver into Portland which prompted local residents to incorporate Damascus and Carver into the City of Damascus through ballot measure 3-138. A 2005 vote approved the newly founded city’s Charter and protected the city from being annexed into Portland, Oregon. Today citizens of Damascus enjoy their close proximity to the nearby communities of Clackamas, Happy Valley, Boring and Gresham.
