See up close and personal up to date fire response technology at its best in a treasured Portland heritage firehouse. Slide down a real fire pole then move to the 911 fire truck interactive simulator. When was the last time you drove a fire truck?

Safety is the way of life for this station so you can expect plenty of educational opportunities presented by the Portland Fire Rescue Learning Center. The fire station itself is a treasure and be sure to check out the 1860 hose cart while enjoying the rich heritage of this ole station. Portland is home to new type of Karaoke bar! The Voicebox is located in NW Portland and is both new and super creative! Instead of your typical Karaoke night, now groups can get together in their own private suite, or box, as they are referred to at The Voicebox. Each box contains a flat screen TV, two microphones, a remote that assists in sound adjustments, selections of songs and even light controls. Each box is also services by The Voicebox staff, offering your group food and drink throughout your stay!
There are six boxes total and a bar outside of the boxes. The boxes range in size, with the largest one able to host a group of 20.
The Voicebox also offers a full menu and specializes in sake cocktails and Japanese themed entrees, the menu changes monthly so be sure to check out their website for all of the latest in their delicious cuisine. They also offer a happy hour every day from 4-7pm and all day on Wednesdays. During happy hour one can expect $4.00 karaoke and terrific food and drink specials.

For five days beginning on the fourth of July Portland’s Water Front will transform into the largest blues festival on the west coast and the second largest blues festival in the country. This year marks the festivals 25th anniversary and as always it is sure please. With performances by some of the best that blues has to offer spanning over five days. With the kick off commencing on the day of our nations mark of independence attendees can enjoy Portland magnificent firework display with the sultry sound of their favorite blues artists as the soundtrack. Aside from music, there will be educational workshops, jam sessions and programming for children. Also featured at the festival will be Oregon Potters Associations Empty Bowls booth. In the month of July, on each Thursday, EcoTrust will be hosting an outdoor concert. Each week there will be a different theme, focusing on sustainable living in our region. The series will of course feature great local and regional talent as well as 40-50 sponsor booths that will provide educational and valuable information on the week’s topic. The entire concert series is powered my solar, wind and bio diesel generators. Hot Lips Pizza and Laughing Planet are on board to bring you some yummy eats and some great refreshments while you listen to some amazing tunes!

June is National Dairy month, and this June the Milk Carton Boat Races are back as a part of the Portland Rose Festival! What is the mission? To build a human powered boat with nothing more than recycled milk jugs and cartons! Then compete to set sail, row or paddle across the West Morland Park Casting Pond. What is your objective? To win the “Best in Show” milk can trophy of course!

The Good in the Neighborhood multi-cultural music and food festival is celebrating 20 years of bringing the community together for a weekend of absolute fun. This year Lake Wood Center for the Arts celebrates its 47th annual Lake Oswego Festival of the Arts. The weekend long festival will take place June 22nd thru the 24th. The Lake Wood Theater Company opened its doors in November of 1952, when a few Lake Oswego residents believed that the city was in great need for a theater. Today the Lake Wood Center and Lake Wood Theater Company is a place to not only absorb and cherish the arts, but also a place to learn and thrive.

The Lake Oswego Festival of Arts will bring over 25,000 people. Each year the festival focuses on a different art form to show case and this year’s art form is Contemporary Encaustic. Encaustic comes from the Greek word that means “to heat”. Artists will work with warm beeswax, resins and pigments to create beautiful works of art. Over 1,000 pieces of art will be on display by artists from all over the world. This is a juried event, so only the best pieces actually make it to the festival.

While we are waiting for the weather to turn to where our focus is on all of the fun summer outdoor activities, there is still one place that is sure to be a blast rain or shine! The Portland’s Children’s Museum is located atop Sylvan Hill right next to the Oregon Zoo. It’s easy to get to by car, or our city’s amazing transit system. With an amazing array of inspiring, creative and educational exhibits, there is no shortage of fun here. Take a trip to Grasshopper Grocery and Butterfly Bistro. Here kids can whirl around a kid sized grocery store fully equipped with a kid sized checkout stand and kid sized carts, they can also play restaurant in the kid sized kitchen and serve all of us adults who can sit and watch all of this fun happen from the kid sized bistro bar! Kids can get a little wet in the Water Works exhibit and learn all about pouring, splashing, spraying, and floating.

Kids will love the Dig Pit exhibit as they fill up tractors and buckets and dump them out again. These are just a few examples of the sensory stimulating, mind working, smile creating exhibits as the Portland’s Children’s Museum. So grab the kids and head out for a day of fun.
